Histoire de Gil Blas
Par M. Le Sage
Published by J. Nourse: London 1777
Complete 4 Volume Set - Illustrated With 34 Plates - Original Leather Bindings

" This elegant and complete four-volume set of Histoire de Gil Blas de Santillane by Alain-René Le Sage stands as one of the great achievements of 18th-century European literature. A defining work of the picaresque tradition, it follows the resourceful and perceptive Gil Blas through a vivid sequence of adventures across Spanish society, blending humour, satire, and sharp social observation. Its lively narrative and enduring insight into human nature secured its place as one of the most widely read and influential novels of its era.

Published in London by J. Nourse, "Libraire du Roi," this Nouvelle Edition, revised and corrected, is complete in four volumes dated MDCCLXXVII (1777). The set is richly illustrated with engraved plates throughout, comprising 9 plates plus frontispiece in Volume I, and 8 plates in each of Volumes II, III, and IV. These finely executed engravings, several signed (notably A. Smith sc.), are characteristic of the period and significantly enhance the visual and collectible appeal of the set.

Bound in contemporary full calf leather, the volumes present beautifully as a cohesive set, with gilt spine bands and volume numbering still visible. There is expected age-related wear including rubbing, scuffing, and some edge wear, with minor cracking to joints, yet all volumes remain solid and intact. Internally, the pages are generally clean and well-preserved, showing light toning and occasional spotting. An early ownership inscription dated May 12th, 1784 appears to the front, adding an intriguing layer of historical character.

A highly desirable and visually appealing 18th-century set, increasingly scarce in complete form with all plates present. Combining literary importance, period illustration, and original bindings, this is a standout acquisition for collectors of French literature, Enlightenment works, or fine antiquarian sets, particularly those drawn to the enduring charm of classic European fiction. "

General wear and fading to covers and spines as shown. Front cover of Volume 1 is wobbly with remaining set in excellent shape. Nice inscription from 1784 is the only marking. Text block bindings are firm with no loose pages. Pages are pleasantly age toned otherwise clean and well presented. A stunning 4 volume set in very good condition overall. Please study photos to further understand condition.
