Milton's Paradise Lost
Illustrated by Gustave Dore'
Edited With Notes And A Life Of Milton by Robert Vaughan
Published by Cassell Petter & Galpin: London undated c1880 (inscription dated 1883)

"Milton's Paradise Lost, illustrated by Gustave Doré, is a visually and thematically powerful edition of John Milton's 17th-century epic poem, which recounts the biblical story of the Fall of Man. Through vivid and elevated verse, Milton explores the rebellion of Satan and his followers, their expulsion from Heaven, and the subsequent temptation of Adam and Eve in the Garden of Eden. The poem delves into complex theological and philosophical themes such as free will, obedience, justice, and redemption. Written in blank verse, Paradise Lost elevates Satan, Adam, Eve, and even God to grand literary figures, while drawing on classical epic traditions to present a cosmic struggle between good and evil.

Gustave Doré's illustrations, created in the 19th century, add a dramatic and often haunting visual dimension to Milton's epic. His engravings capture the grandeur and emotional intensity of key scenes—Satan's fall, the despair of Adam and Eve, and the sublime vastness of Heaven and Hell—with a blend of realism and fantasy. Doré's use of light, shadow, and monumental scale enhances the poem's themes of divine judgment, human frailty, and celestial majesty. The combination of Milton's majestic language and Doré's striking visuals makes this edition a lasting classic, celebrated not only for its literary importance but also as a masterpiece of illustrated publishing."
