The Convict King. Being The Life And Adventures Of Jorgen Jorgenson
Retold by James Francis Hogan
Published by Ward & Downey: London 1891 1st Edition

" The Convict King: Being the Life and Adventures of Jorgen Jorgenson, retold by James Francis Hogan, chronicles the extraordinary life of Jørgen Jørgensen (1780-1841), a Danish adventurer whose exploits spanned continents and defied convention. Born in Copenhagen, Jørgensen embarked on a seafaring life at a young age, eventually finding himself in British service. His most audacious episode occurred in 1809 when he declared himself the ruler of Iceland during a brief rebellion against Danish authority, earning him the moniker "The Dog-Days King." This short-lived reign was marked by his attempts to establish a republic, inspired by revolutionary ideals, before British forces restored Danish control.

Following his Icelandic venture, Jørgensen's life was a tapestry of dramatic turns: he served as a British spy during the Napoleonic Wars, faced multiple imprisonments for debts and other offenses, and was eventually transported to Van Diemen's Land (now Tasmania) as a convict. In the colony, he reinvented himself once more, taking roles such as explorer, constable, and even participating in the controversial "Black Line" campaign against Aboriginal Tasmanians. Hogan's retelling, based on Jørgensen's own writings and other historical records, paints a vivid portrait of a man whose life was a series of reinventions and adventures, reflecting the tumultuous spirit of his era."
