"The Picturesque Atlas of Australasia, edited by the Hon. Andrew Garran and issued between 1886 and 1888 by the Picturesque Atlas Publishing Company of Sydney and Melbourne, is among the most ambitious and visually striking publications of colonial Australia. Produced during a period of growing national confidence, it set out to document the landscapes, settlements, industries, and peoples of Australasia in a grand, encyclopaedic form. Written by leading contemporary contributors and enriched with descriptive narrative, the work presents both a historical account and a celebratory survey of the colonies as they approached Federation.

Supervised illustratively by Frederic B. Schell, the atlas is renowned for its extensive and finely executed engravings, which capture cityscapes, rural life, Indigenous subjects, and scenes of exploration with remarkable detail and atmosphere. The visual content is central to its appeal, offering a vivid pictorial record of late nineteenth-century Australasia. This rebound set, now housed across two volumes, retains the impressive scale and presence of the original issue and includes the large Railway, Postal & Telegraph Map of New South Wales (measuring approximately 695mm x 900mm), a significant and desirable survival, though the remaining five issued maps are not present.

Despite the absence of these additional maps and its later rebinding, the work remains a landmark publication—highly sought after for its historical scope, artistic merit, and documentary value. The combination of sweeping narrative and richly detailed illustration ensures its continued importance as both a reference and a display piece, embodying the optimism and identity of the colonial era. It would appeal strongly to collectors of Australian history, illustrated books, and nineteenth-century colonial publications."

Both volumes have been professionally rebound retaining much of the original skins. Endpapers tastefully replaced. Binding result is excellent with no loose pages and the leaves unfurling in a most pleasing manner. Includes NSW Railway map only, lacking remaining 5. Volumes appear otherwise as complete including all bound maps, charts, full page plate illustrations etc. Some very minor age marking to endpapers with the vast majority of both volumes being remarkably clean and well presented. Gilt edging remains in good order. A hard to find pair in DECENT condition, these 2 volumes present very well indeed. Both volumes in good condition overall. Please study photos closely to fully understand condition.
