Good Words For 1862 by Norman Macleod - Antique British History Book

Good Words For 1862
Edited by Norman Macleod - One Of Her Majesty's Chaplains For Scotland
Illustrated by JE Millais, Holman Hunt, John Tenniel, Charles Keene, Frederick Walker, JD Watson and others
Published by Alexander Strahan & Co: London 1867

"Norman Macleod (1812 - 1872) was a Scottish clergyman and author who served as Moderator of the General Assembly of the Church of Scotland in 1869/70. In 1860 Macleod was appointed editor of the new monthly magazine Good Words , illustrated by Arthur Hughes, Francis Arthur Fraser (1846-1924), John Leighton, James Mahoney (1810-1879), Francis S. Walker, Townley Green and others. Under his control the magazine, which was mainly of a religious character, became widely popular. Most of his own literary work originally appeared in its pages — sermons, stories, travels, poems. His best work was the spontaneous Reminiscences of a Highland Parish (1867). While Good Words made his name known, his relations with the queen and the royal family strengthened yet further his position in the country."

Cover is well worn with cover sheets removed with leather remaining as shown. The binding to the front and back hinges is weak, has very old tape repairs and could well do with some TLC from an expert book binder. There are however no loose pages and the text block binding is very good. There is some foxing to the first few and last few pages with the majority of the book clean. Would be described as good condition if not for the fragile spine/hinge binding to cover. A decent copy of a fairly scarce title. Please study photos to understand condition. Happy to provide more photos on request.
