Complete four-volume set, genuine first editions as issued 1879 - 1889. The first three volumes are printed with the then held belief there would be just one more volume to follow. Therefore, Vol. 1 states it is one of two, Vol. 2 states it is two of three, and so on. Vol.4 includes an appendix.

All 4 volumes have heavy wear to the covers and spines. Inside hinges split on most volumes and covers are wobbly yet attached ok. Outside hinges have a few splits as shown. Endpapers in volume 1 loose as shown. Last page in volume 1 is stained from endpaper bleed through. No foxing with pages typically clean and bright. Quite heavy volumes hence the stress worn by the spines over time. A tired but complete first edition set of this desirable work. Please study photos to understand condition.
