The Children Of The New Forest
By Captain Marryat
Published by Blackie & Son: London c1900 (Undated)

"The Children of the New Forest by Captain Marryat is a classic of early English historical fiction, first published in 1847 and here presented in an attractive c.1900 Blackie & Son edition with an Art Nouveau-style decorative green and orange cloth binding. Set during the English Civil War, the story follows the four Beverley children, left orphaned after their Royalist father is killed and their home burned by Parliamentary troops. Hidden in the New Forest under the care of the forester Jacob Armitage, they learn to live self-sufficiently while the nation around them is torn apart by conflict and changing loyalties.

Marryat, a distinguished Royal Navy officer turned novelist, weaves adventure, moral growth, and social contrast into a tale that has captivated generations. His sympathetic portrayal of both sides of the conflict and his vivid depiction of rural England make the book a milestone in early Victorian children's literature. This edition, with its period gift inscription and fine frontispiece illustration, would appeal to collectors of decorative bindings, admirers of classic English adventure fiction, and enthusiasts of Victorian publishing design.
