Sacred Poetry
, edited by the Reverend Henry Stebbing and printed for J.F. Dove of London circa 1834, is a reverent and beautifully composed anthology of devotional verse drawn from a wide range of English poets. The collection gathers meditative and moral reflections on faith, virtue, mortality, and divine love, arranged to inspire both private contemplation and public worship. Stebbing, an eminent clergyman and literary editor of the early nineteenth century, provides a thoughtful selection that unites classical and contemporary voices in praise of spiritual truth, giving readers a lyrical exploration of the moral spirit of the age.
Produced during a period of renewed religious sentiment and fine literary craftsmanship, this early Victorian devotional work exemplifies the elegant typography and compact design characteristic of Dove's press. A scarce and handsome volume, it holds appeal for collectors of early nineteenth-century religious poetry, admirers of sacred verse, and those drawn to the moral and devotional literature of the Romantic and early Victorian periods.
