AINSWORTH-DAVIS was born at Bristol in 1861, the son of the Rev. James Davis. He studied under Profs. Huxley and Judd at the Royal School of Mines, London, and afterwards at Trinity College, Cambridge, where he gained a first In both parts of the Natural Science Tripos. Shortly afterwards appointed lecturer at the University College of Wales Aberystwyth, he threw himself into the work of that institution and was elected professor of zoology and geology. He was a teacher of marked power and strong personality with an unusual gift for epigrammatic statement, and he sought to understand and help his students outside as well as inside the classroom. His home was always open to students and colleagues, and his versatility showed itself in amateur acting, verse writing, organising and commanding the college O.T.C., campaigning for the hall of residence for women students-one of the earliest of these institutions-as well as in scientific writing. In the latter field he wrote papers, some in collaboration with his students, on molluscan morphology, but his chief interest was in teaching, and his textbook of biology, his "Natural History of Animals" and other works have been widely used."General wear and fading to covers and spines with a few marks as shown. "Science in Modern Life (London: The Gresham Publishing Company, 1909), edited by J. R. Ainsworth Davis, is a monumental six-volume reference work designed to present the scientific knowledge of the early 20th century in a form accessible to the educated general reader. Spanning disciplines from physics, chemistry, and biology to astronomy, geology, medicine, and engineering, the set captures a moment of rapid scientific progress at the dawn of the modern industrial age. Each volume features contributions from leading specialists of the period, richly illustrated with diagrams, plates, and photographs, explaining the principles underlying natural phenomena and their practical applications in everyday life. The series sought to show how science had transformed modern civilization—shaping transportation, communication, agriculture, health, and industry—while also emphasizing the moral and intellectual benefits of scientific understanding.

Beyond its encyclopedic scope, Science in Modern Life reflects the optimism and intellectual ambition of Edwardian Britain, when science was viewed as both a tool of progress and a force for social improvement. Ainsworth Davis and his collaborators write with a tone of confident rationalism, blending empirical clarity with literary polish, and addressing readers ranging from students to professionals. The set also embodies the aesthetic standards of Gresham's fine illustrated editions, making it as much a work of art as of education. Today, it stands as a fascinating time capsule of pre-war scientific thought—an enduring testament to the curiosity, craftsmanship, and faith in human advancement that defined the early 20th-century scientific spirit."
