"Published in 1900 by L. Upcott Gill of London, this substantial supplement to The Dictionary of Gardening was produced to bring the celebrated horticultural reference work up to date at the opening of the twentieth century. Issued as Volume V of the larger series, it records recent plant introductions, developments in cultivation, advances in the understanding of diseases and pests, and other discoveries connected with the rapidly progressing science of horticulture.
Arranged alphabetically for ready consultation, the volume contains detailed entries covering ornamental plants, trees, shrubs, bulbs, orchids, fruit and numerous cultivated varieties from around the world. Botanical descriptions are accompanied by practical information concerning growth habits, propagation, soil, temperature, flowering seasons and garden use. Profusely illustrated throughout with botanical drawings, photographs and particularly attractive full-page colour plates, it remains an excellent historical reference work even when used independently of the preceding four volumes.
This imposing volume is preserved in a handsome half-leather binding, with dark green cloth boards, leather spine and corners, raised bands and gilt-lettered title panel. The decorative marbled page edges add further visual appeal. Although offered as Volume V only, the book is complete as the separately conceived 1900 Supplement, making it both a useful standalone record of late-Victorian horticulture and an attractive addition to a gardening, botanical or natural-history collection."
