"A beautifully preserved matching pair of late 19th-century German theatrical works by Nobel laureate Gerhart Hauptmann (1862-1946), comprising College Crampton (Komödie in 5 Akten, sixth edition) and Fuhrmann Henschel (Schauspiel in 5 Akten, fourth edition), both published by S. Fischer Verlag, Berlin, 1899.

Each volume is bound in original decorative Art Nouveau (Jugendstil) cloth with black and gilt stylised borders and lettering, typical of the fine design aesthetic of the period. The patterned endpapers and tipped silk bookmarks remain intact, and one volume features a charming early bookplate for Georg J. Meyer. These works represent Hauptmann's realist and social themes at the height of German naturalist theatre, exploring the moral struggles of ordinary lives with striking emotional depth."

Light wear to covers and spine as shown. Pages clean and beautifully presented with a pleasant aged patina. Binding is excellent with no loose pages and secure, firm covers. Both copies carry the ex-libris bookplate of George J. Meyer. Excellent copies in very good condition overall. Please study photos to further understand condition.
