"Lloyd's Encyclopaedic Dictionary: A New and Original Work of Reference to the Words in the English Language is an ambitious late-Victorian lexicon published by Edward Lloyd Limited of London in 1895. This monumental work provides an exhaustive account of English vocabulary, tracing each word's origin, pronunciation, and nuanced meanings while illustrating its proper usage through examples from literature and science. Lavishly illustrated with numerous engravings, diagrams, and tables, the dictionary reflects the intellectual energy of its age — when scholarship, pedagogy, and the popular press sought to democratize access to knowledge. Each entry was carefully compiled to combine philological precision with accessibility, making the set both an academic resource and a household reference.
Issued in seven volumes (with this set containing the first six only), Lloyd's Encyclopaedic Dictionary captures the richness of the English language at the height of the British Empire and stands as a testament to the era's fascination with language and learning. Its detailed etymologies and cross-referenced structure mark it as one of the more refined general dictionaries of its time. This partial 1895 set will appeal to collectors of Victorian reference works, bibliophiles of English lexicography, and anyone interested in the evolution of late-19th-century scholarship and publishing."
