"Jonathan Swift (30 November 1667 - 19 October 1745) was an Anglo-Irish satirist, author, essayist, political pamphleteer (first for the Whigs, then for the Tories), poet, and Anglican cleric who became Dean of St Patrick's Cathedral, Dublin, hence his common sobriquet, "Dean Swift". Swift is remembered for works such as A Tale of a Tub (1704), An Argument Against Abolishing Christianity (1712), Gulliver's Travels (1726), and A Modest Proposal (1729). He is regarded by the Encyclopædia Britannica as the foremost prose satirist in the English language. He originally published all of his works under pseudonyms—such as Lemuel Gulliver, Isaac Bickerstaff, M. B. Drapier—or anonymously. He was a master of two styles of satire, the Horatian and Juvenalian styles."General wear and fading to covers and spine with a few stains as shown. The Tale Of A Tub And Other Works
By Jonathan Swift
Edited by Henry Morley

Volume I Of The Carisbrooke Library
Provenance : Ex Libris Bookplate Of The Yorick Club (Melbourne, Australia)

"The Yorick Club was a gentlemen's club in Melbourne, Australia, whose membership consisted originally of men involved in the arts and sciences. It was founded in 1868 and continued in some form into the 1950s and perhaps beyond."

" First published in 1704, The Tale of a Tub remains one of Jonathan Swift's boldest and most penetrating satires, attacking the corruptions of religion, learning, and literary fashion through a brilliantly chaotic narrative. In this 1889 Carisbrooke Library edition—the first issued in this format—editor Henry Morley presents Swift's text with helpful contextual notes that illuminate its complicated allegories and place it firmly within the political and theological debates of early eighteenth-century England. Morley's introduction also traces the pamphlet's notorious reception, explaining why its irreverence hindered Swift's ecclesiastical ambitions even as it cemented his reputation as a satirist of extraordinary power.

In addition to the title work, this volume includes several shorter pieces that showcase Swift's versatility across genres of satire, parody, and scholarly mock-treatise. These companion works underline Swift's obsession with intellectual pretension, moral decay, and the absurdities of modern thought—recurring themes that anticipate later masterpieces such as Gulliver's Travels. The Carisbrooke Library series was intended to make important works of English literature available in authoritative but accessible editions, and this volume exemplifies that aim through its careful scholarship and elegant Victorian production.

This copy carries a distinguished Melbourne provenance, bearing the ex libris bookplate of the Yorick Club, a celebrated nineteenth-century literary and artistic society whose members included leading writers, thinkers, and journalists of colonial Victoria. A fascinating association piece, it offers not only Swift's enduring satire but also a tangible link to the intellectual culture of late-Victorian Melbourne—an appealing acquisition for collectors of Jonathan Swift, students of early satire, and enthusiasts of Australian literary history."
