The Poetical Works Of Thomas Moore
Edited With Memoir & Notes by Charles Kent
Published by George Routledge & Sons: London 1885
With Elaborate Wooden Covers With Painted Scene On Front - Front Cover Detached - Illustrated Throughout

"A richly produced late-Victorian edition of the beloved Irish poet and songwriter Thomas Moore, this 1885 volume gathers together Moore's celebrated lyrical works alongside memoir material and editorial notes by Charles Kent. Best remembered for works such as Irish Melodies and Lalla Rookh, Moore's poetry blended romance, nationalism and sentimentality, earning him enormous popularity throughout the English-speaking world during the 19th century. This George Routledge & Sons edition reflects that popularity, issued as an attractively illustrated gift book intended for both reading and display.

Particularly notable are the elaborate wooden covers, featuring a painted floral and butterfly scene to the front board, giving the book a distinctive handcrafted appearance uncommon in standard Victorian bindings. The decorative aesthetic, combined with numerous illustrations throughout, makes the volume as much a decorative object as a literary work. The patterned endpapers, period typography and engraved imagery all contribute to the charm and character associated with late-19th-century presentation editions.

This copy bears signs of a long and well-used life, including a detached front cover and notable spine wear, yet it retains strong visual appeal and historical atmosphere. An inscription dated June 21st 1890 adds further period authenticity and personal provenance. Despite its faults, the book remains a striking example of Victorian decorative publishing and would appeal to collectors of antique poetry, unusual bindings, illustrated literature and 19th-century gift books."
