"
Our Charley and What to Do with Him by Mrs. H. B. Stowe, published by Phillips, Sampson & Company in Boston in 1858, is a touching moral tale from one of America's most celebrated authors, Harriet Beecher Stowe. Written in the decade following Uncle Tom's Cabin, this early and now scarce work blends fiction with social reflection, offering a domestic narrative centered on youth, discipline, and moral education. Stowe uses the character of "Charley" to explore themes of boyhood mischief, moral development, and the influence of family and faith in shaping character. With her characteristic warmth and insight, she presents a story both entertaining and instructive, reflecting the 19th-century ideal of literature as a vehicle for ethical guidance.
The book exemplifies Stowe's deep concern for social virtue and personal responsibility, couched within the affectionate humor and sentimentality that endeared her to Victorian readers. Its first edition status and rarity make it a valuable collector's item, particularly for those interested in early American moral literature, women writers of the 19th century, or the lesser-known works of Harriet Beecher Stowe beyond her abolitionist legacy.
Harriet Elisabeth Beecher Stowe (1811 - 1896) was an American author and abolitionist. She came from the religious Beecher family and wrote the popular novel Uncle Tom's Cabin (1852), which depicts the harsh conditions experienced by enslaved African Americans. The book reached an audience of millions as a novel and play, and became influential in the United States and in Great Britain, energizing anti-slavery forces in the American North, while provoking widespread anger in the South. Stowe wrote 30 books, including novels, three travel memoirs, and collections of articles and letters. She was influential both for her writings as well as for her public stances and debates on social issues of the day."
