1856 Remarkable Incidents In Life Of Rev. J.H. Fairchild Antique History Book

Remarkable Incidents In The Life Of Rev. J.H. Fairchild, Pastor Of Payson Church, South Boston
Compiled by Himself
Published by Rev. J.H. Fairchild: Boston 3rd Edition
Original Cloth Bindings With Portrait Frontis
" Remarkable Incidents in the Life of Rev. J. H. Fairchild is a candid and deeply personal nineteenth-century religious memoir, authored and self-published by the Reverend Joy H. Fairchild, Pastor of the Payson Church, South Boston. Issued here in the 1856 Third Edition, the work presents Fairchild's own account of the controversies, ecclesiastical disputes, and personal trials that marked his ministerial career. Subtitled "Persecuted, But Not Forsaken," the volume reflects the turbulent religious climate of mid-nineteenth century New England and offers a rare, first-hand narrative of church governance, doctrinal conflict, and pastoral endurance within the Congregational tradition.

The text is notable for its forthright tone and its detailed examination of civil and ecclesiastical proceedings, with Fairchild positioning his experiences as "stranger than fiction." As both compiler and publisher, Fairchild exercised full control over the presentation of his case, lending the work a distinctive immediacy and authenticity. The inclusion of the engraved portrait frontispiece enhances the historical value of the volume, providing a visual record of the author and reinforcing the autobiographical nature of the text.

This example retains its original brown cloth bindings, decoratively blind-stamped with gilt titling to the spine, characteristic of mid-Victorian American publishing. Such self-published clerical memoirs were often printed in modest numbers and circulated within specific religious communities, making surviving copies increasingly uncommon. A compelling piece of American ecclesiastical history, this volume will appeal to collectors of nineteenth-century religious works, students of New England church history, and those interested in personal narratives of faith, controversy, and perseverance."
