By Austen Henry Layard
Imprint: John Murray: London 1850 1st Edition
Complete 2 Volume Set

"Sir Austen Henry Layard GCB PC (5 March 1817 - 5 July 1894) was an English Assyriologist, traveller, cuneiformist, art historian, draughtsman, collector, politician and diplomat. He was born to a mostly English family in Paris and largely raised in Italy. He is best known as the excavator of Nimrud and of Nineveh , where he uncovered a large proportion of the Assyrian palace reliefs known, and in 1851 the library of Ashurbanipal. Most of his finds are now in the British Museum. He made a large amount of money from his best-selling accounts of his excavations."

General wear, fading and some damage to covers and spines (top and bottom, mainly bottom of vol 1) as shown. Binding is excellent across both volumes with no loose pages (frontis tissue paper in vol 2 is loose). All plates, folding plates, maps etc are present across both volumes. Pages are typically clean with only a few pages having light age spots. There is a small tear where the folding map is affixed to the book (in photo). A nice set in very good condition overall. Please study photos carefully to understand condition. Happy to provide more photos and answer any queries on request.
