1845 Notes To The Holy Bible by D'Oyly & Mant Antique Illustrated Theology Book
Notes, Explanatory and Practical, to the Authorized Version of the Holy Bible
Prepared and Arranged by the Rev. George D'Oyly and the Rev. Richard Mant
Published by Society For Promoting Christian Knowledge: London 1845
All Plates & Maps Present As Called For
"Notes, Explanatory and Practical, to the Authorized Version of the Holy Bible (1845) is an impressive and comprehensive commentary prepared by the Rev. George D'Oyly and the Rev. Richard Mant under the direction of the Society for Promoting Christian Knowledge. This monumental volume gathers the full body of explanatory notes originally issued with the celebrated Family Bible, presenting detailed introductions, scholarly annotations, doctrinal insights, and historical context for every book from Genesis through Maccabees. Designed to guide readers through both the literal and theological meaning of Scripture, it reflects the intellectual rigour of mid-19th-century Anglican scholarship and remains an important work in the history of English biblical commentary.
Richly enhanced with large fold-out maps, engraved plates, and architectural illustrations—such as the Tabernacle in the Wilderness, the garments of the High Priest, and the geographic dominions referenced in Kings—this volume provides both visual and textual depth. The maps orient the reader within biblical geography, while the plates illuminate cultural, ritual, and historical elements that shaped the peoples of the Old Testament. The layout combines double-column Scripture passages with extensive footnotes drawn from renowned theologians, church fathers, and early Christian commentators, making the work as practical as it is scholarly.
Housed in a full contemporary leather binding with raised bands and contrasting black gilt-lettered labels, the book has the presence and gravitas expected of a mid-Victorian theological reference. Its scope, illustrations, and careful editorial arrangement make it an appealing acquisition for collectors of early religious works, scholars of biblical history, and those with an interest in the evolution of English theological publishing."
General wear, rub through and fading to covers and spine as shown. All illustrations present as called for. No inscriptions. Pages clean and well presented with pleasant age toning. Binding is very good with no loose pages. Outer front hinge split and cover is wobbly but secure and structural integrity of book is decent. A nice copy of a stunning bible reference work in good to very good condition overall. Please study photos to further understand condition.
