Animal & Vegetable Physiology Considered With Reference To Natural Theology
By Peter Mark Roget
Published by William Pickering: London 1834 1st Edition
Complete 2 Volume Set

"Animal and Vegetable Physiology Considered with Reference to Natural Theology (1834), by Peter Mark Roget and published by William Pickering, London, is the fifth treatise in the celebrated Bridgewater Treatises series, commissioned to explore the harmony between science and divine design. In this two-volume first edition, Roget—best known later for his Thesaurus—presents a detailed examination of the structures and functions of living organisms, arguing that the intricate mechanisms of life reflect the wisdom and purpose of a Creator. Drawing upon the latest discoveries in comparative anatomy, botany, and physiology, he describes the interdependence of organic systems in both animals and plants, linking the precision of biological processes to moral and theological reflection.

Written in an elegant and accessible style, the work bridges the gap between scientific inquiry and religious philosophy, embodying the spirit of early Victorian natural theology. The numerous engraved plates and diagrams enhance the clarity of Roget's explanations, illustrating organs, tissues, and microscopic structures with scientific precision. This complete two-volume first edition remains a cornerstone of nineteenth-century thought, representing both a landmark in the popularisation of biological science and a profound testament to the era's belief in the unity of faith and reason."
