"The History of the Sufferings of the Church of Scotland: From the Restoration to the Revolution (1829), authored by Rev. Robert Wodrow and edited by Rev. Robert Burns, is one of the most comprehensive and authoritative accounts of the Scottish Presbyterian Church's persecution during the seventeenth century. Covering the turbulent years between the Restoration of Charles II (1660) and the Revolution of 1688, Wodrow's monumental chronicle records the trials, executions, imprisonments, and exiles endured by Covenanters who resisted the imposition of episcopacy and royal interference in religious matters. The work, grounded in meticulous documentary evidence, eyewitness accounts, and ministerial correspondence, paints a vivid picture of the moral steadfastness, suffering, and martyrdom that characterized this defining period of Scottish ecclesiastical history.
The 1829 Glasgow edition by Blackie, Fullarton & Co., revised and annotated by Rev. Robert Burns, brought Wodrow's eighteenth-century text to a new audience with scholarly commentary and historical framing suited to the nineteenth-century reader. Burns' editorial contributions clarify dates, contextualize key figures, and enhance Wodrow's original manuscript with supplementary sources drawn from church records and state papers. Together, they preserve an invaluable record of faith under persecution, serving both as a historical document and a devotional testament to the endurance of Scottish Presbyterianism. This edition remains a cornerstone reference for students of Reformation and Covenanter history, combining narrative force with archival precision."
