"First published in the eighteenth century and long regarded as one of the standard English-Latin lexicons, Ainsworth's Latin Dictionary appears here in its 1823 second edition, printed in London for C. & J. Rivington and others. Originally compiled by Robert Ainsworth, the work was substantially improved and enlarged by Dr Thomas Morell, and further revised by John Carey, LL.D., who enriched the text with additional explanations, classical authorities, and refinements drawn from extensive scholarship. By the early nineteenth century it had become a cornerstone reference for students, clergy, and scholars engaged in the serious study of the Latin language.

The dictionary is notable for its breadth of citation from classical authors, reflecting the humanist tradition of grounding vocabulary in authoritative literary usage. Carey's editorial preface emphasises corrections, expansions, and the incorporation of improved readings, demonstrating the ongoing evolution of classical scholarship during the Georgian period. Large and substantial in format, this edition would have been intended for academic or institutional use, forming part of the intellectual foundation of grammar schools, universities, and private classical education throughout Britain.

This example retains its original bindings, now heavily worn with visible rubbing, scuffing and loss to the spine, commensurate with long and practical use. The well-used condition speaks to the working life of the volume as a genuine scholarly tool rather than a decorative piece. An authentic early nineteenth-century classical reference work, it will appeal to collectors of antiquarian dictionaries, classical studies, Georgian printing, and the history of education."
