Published For The Proprietors by WM. Clarke, J. Murray etc: London 1816 1st Edition
Stunning Leather & Marbled Decoration Bindings - Profusely Illustrated With Copperplate & Wood Engravings - Includes Volumes 1, 2, 3, 4, 6, & 7 of a 7 Volume Set (Lacks Volume 5 - Spine Label States Volume 5 for Volume 6 and Volume 6 For Volume 7).

" First published in 1816, The Antiquarian Itinerary is an ambitious and richly illustrated survey of Britain's architectural and archaeological heritage, capturing the early nineteenth century's Romantic fascination with medieval, monastic, castellated, and domestic remains. Conceived as both a visual record and descriptive guide, the work documents cathedrals, abbeys, castles, gateways, Roman relics, and other vestiges of antiquity across Great Britain, combining antiquarian scholarship with evocative topographical writing. Issued by leading London publishers including Wm. Clarke and J. Murray, the first edition stands as an important contribution to the period's growing movement to record and preserve the nation's historic fabric.

Profusely illustrated throughout with finely executed copperplate and wood engravings, the volumes contain detailed views of ecclesiastical ruins, sculptural fragments, crypts, architectural details, and historic townscapes. These plates are not merely decorative but documentary in character, preserving visual records of monuments at a time when restoration and industrial change threatened many ancient structures. The engravings, paired with descriptive text, reflect the scholarly curiosity and aesthetic sensibility of Regency Britain, making the work both an artistic production and a valuable architectural reference.

This handsome set is bound in striking leather with marbled boards and matching marbled edges, presenting an impressive early nineteenth-century decorative appearance. Offered here are Volumes I, II, III, IV, VI, and VII of the original seven-volume series (lacking Volume V), with an interesting binder's anomaly whereby the spine label states Volume V for Volume VI and Volume VI for Volume VII. Despite the missing volume, the set remains a substantial and visually arresting example of early illustrated antiquarian publishing, and will appeal to collectors of architectural history, Regency topography, and finely bound period sets."
