"Carlo Gemmellaro's Giornale dell'Eruzione dell'Etna stands as an important early scientific chronicle of Mount Etna's eruptive activity in the first decades of the nineteenth century. Written by one of Sicily's foremost early geologists and natural philosophers, the work records observations of the volcanic events surrounding the 1819 eruption, placing them within the developing scientific discourse of European geology. Gemmellaro engages with contemporary theories of volcanic action, referencing figures such as Humphry Davy, and situates Etna within broader debates concerning subterranean fire, mineral transformation, and the structure of the earth's crust.

The companion treatise, Osservazioni Fisiche sopra alcuni pezzi di granito e di lave antiche, expands the inquiry into the physical nature of granite and lava formations found near the summit of Etna. Through empirical observation and comparative reasoning, Gemmellaro explores the relationship between granite, basalt, and volcanic fusion, contributing to early nineteenth-century understanding of igneous processes. His work reflects the transitional moment in geology when systematic field observation began replacing speculative natural philosophy.

Of particular note are the engraved folding plates depicting the interior state of the summit crater across multiple years, offering rare visual documentation of Etna's changing morphology. Such illustrations provide both scientific and historical value, capturing volcanic transformation with striking clarity. This volume would appeal strongly to collectors of early geology, volcanology, Italian scientific history, and Grand Tour era natural history works."
