1762 La Henriade Par Monsieur De Voltaire Antiquarian French Poetry Book

1762 La Henriade Par Monsieur De Voltaire Antiquarian French Poetry BookLa Henriade - Avec les Variantes & un Essai fur la Poesie EpiqueBy Monsieur De VoltairePublished by Chez Francoise l'Honore: Amsterdam 1762English Translation: "The Henriad - With Variants & an Essay on Epic Poetry""La Henriade is an epic poem of 1723 written by the French Enlightenment writer and philosopher Voltaire. According to Voltaire himself, the poem concerns and was written in honour of the life of Henry IV of France, and is a celebration of his life. The ostensible subject is the siege of Paris in 1589 by Henry III in concert with Henry of Navarre, soon to be Henry IV, but its themes are the twin evils of religious fanaticism and civil discord. It also concerns the political state of France. Voltaire aimed to be the French Virgil, outdoing the master by preserving Aristotelian unity of place—a property of classical tragedy rather than epic—by keeping the human action confined between Paris and Ivry. It was first printed (under the title La Ligue) in 1723, and reprinted dozens of times within Voltaire's lifetime."Heavy wear and fading to cover and spine as shown. Theatre De Voltaire
Published by Pierre Didot, et Firmin Didot: Paris 1813
Complete Set - 12 Volumes In 6 Books

English Translation: " Voltaire Theatre"

"The Théâtre de Voltaire, published by Pierre Didot and Firmin Didot in Paris, is a grand 12-volume collection bound in 6 books, showcasing the dramatic works of one of France's most influential Enlightenment figures, Voltaire. This comprehensive edition brings together Voltaire's tragedies, comedies, and historical dramas, reflecting his mastery of theatrical form and his relentless engagement with themes of justice, reason, tyranny, and religious intolerance. With classical structure and incisive dialogue, plays such as Zaïre, Mahomet, and Alzire exemplify his effort to fuse philosophical inquiry with dramatic tension, often using historical or exotic settings as vehicles for Enlightenment critique.

The Didot edition is notable not only for its literary content but also for its exquisite typographic and printing quality, characteristic of the Didot family's innovations in fine bookmaking during the late 18th and early 19th centuries. The volumes are printed on fine paper with elegant typefaces and wide margins, embodying the neoclassical aesthetic of the era. This set represents both a literary monument to Voltaire's enduring legacy in French theatre and a collector's treasure of bibliographic craftsmanship. It serves as a testament to how Enlightenment ideals were preserved and elevated through the art of printing."
