" George Whitefield (1714 - 1770), also known as George Whitfield, was an English Anglican minister and preacher who was one of the founders of Methodism and the evangelical movement. Born in Gloucester, he matriculated at Pembroke College, Oxford in 1732. There, he joined the "Holy Club" and was introduced to John and Charles Wesley, with whom he would work closely in his later ministry. Unlike the Wesleys, he embraced Calvinism.

Memoirs of the Late Reverend George Whitefield, A.M., of Pembroke College, Oxford, compiled by Rev. John Gillies and later revised and corrected by John Jones, offers a detailed and admiring account of one of the most influential evangelical preachers of the 18th century. Published in 1811 by T. Williams in London, the memoir traces Whitefield's early life, religious awakening at Oxford, and his central role in the rise of Methodism alongside John and Charles Wesley. The book highlights his extraordinary preaching tours across Britain and the American colonies, where his passionate oratory drew vast crowds and sparked widespread spiritual revival.

The memoir places strong emphasis on Whitefield's theological convictions, tireless missionary work, and the transformative impact of his ministry on both sides of the Atlantic. Drawing from his personal letters, sermons, and eyewitness accounts, it presents a portrait of a man driven by faith and deeply committed to the salvation of others. As a historical and spiritual biography, the book not only preserves the legacy of George Whitefield but also provides insight into the broader religious fervour of the Great Awakening and the early evangelical movement."
