De FenelonPublished by Chez Seguin: Avignon 1804English Translation: "The Adventures of Telemachus, Son of Ulysses and those of Aristonous" "Les aventures de Télémaque, fils d'Ulysse (English: The adventures of Telemachus, son of Ulysses) is a didactic novel by François Fénelon, Archbishop of Cambrai, who in 1689 became tutor to the seven-year-old Duc de Bourgogne (grandson of Louis XIV and second in line to the French throne). It was published anonymously in 1699 and reissued in 1717 by his family. The slender plot fills out a gap in Homer's Odyssey, recounting the educational travels of Telemachus, son of Ulysses, accompanied by his tutor, Mentor, who is revealed early on in the story to be Minerva, goddess of wisdom, in disguise.."Heavy wear and fading to cover and spine with some damage to the outer spine as shown. Les Aventures de Télémaque Fils D'Ulysse et celles d'Aristonous
By M. De Fenelon
Published by Chez Seguin: Avignon 1804

English Translation: " The Adventures of Telemachus, Son of Ulysses and those of Aristonous"

" This early nineteenth-century provincial printing of Fénelon's Les Aventures de Télémaque presents one of the most enduring literary works of the French classical tradition. Blending didactic moral philosophy with adventure narrative, Fénelon recounts the travels and education of Telemachus, son of Ulysses, as he learns the virtues of justice, moderation, courage and good kingship under the wise guidance of Mentor. The additional narrative of Aristonous complements the main tale, extending its moral scope and reinforcing Fénelon's message that true leadership is founded on humility, compassion and self-restraint. Long celebrated for its elegant prose and its subtle critique of absolute monarchy, Télémaque became a cornerstone text in Enlightenment education and political thought.

Printed in Avignon in 1804 by Chez Seguin, this edition represents the continuation of Fénelon's influence well into the post-Revolution era, when questions of governance, virtue and moral authority held urgent national relevance. Provincial French printings of Télémaque from this period are increasingly scarce, making this volume a valuable artifact of both literary and historical significance. It will appeal strongly to collectors of early French literature, students of Enlightenment moral philosophy, and admirers of classical narratives that shaped European political and educational thought for generations."
