" The Works of Dr Jonathan Swift, Volume I, presents two of Swift's most brilliant and influential satirical works, written at the height of his intellectual powers and originally conceived as weapons against pretension, corruption, and false learning. A Tale of a Tub, first published in 1704, is a dazzlingly complex satire that attacks religious excess, dogmatism, and intellectual vanity through a riot of allegory, digression, parody, and mock scholarship. Swift's prose is deliberately destabilising—by turns erudite, absurd, and savage—forcing the reader to confront the fragility of reason and the ease with which authority can be abused under the guise of learning or piety.

Accompanying this is A Full and True Account of the Battle Fought Last Friday Between the Ancient and the Modern Books in St James's Library, a sharply imaginative allegory that dramatizes the contemporary debate between classical authority and modern innovation. By transforming books into combatants, Swift exposes the vanity, pedantry, and intellectual arrogance on both sides of the argument, while subtly affirming the enduring power of classical thought. Together, these works exemplify Swift's unmatched ability to fuse wit, moral seriousness, and intellectual playfulness, making them central texts of early eighteenth-century English literature and satire.

This 1751 London edition, printed for C. Bathurst, is illustrated with eight engraved plates that visually reinforce Swift's satirical imagination and add considerable appeal to the volume. As the first volume only of a collected works set, it stands well on its own as a concentrated expression of Swift's genius and cultural influence. This edition will particularly appeal to collectors of early English literature, students of satire and intellectual history, and admirers of Jonathan Swift's fearless, inventive, and enduring literary voice."
