1719 Penitential Tables Old New Testament Illustrated Antiquarian Theology Book

Penitential Tables Being Lively Representations Of The Most Illustrious Penitents Of The Old and New Testament.
Written Originally In French, In The Civil Wars Of France, During The Minority Of Lewis XIV, The Late King
By Antoine Godeau
Printed For C. Rivington, J. Sackfield, B. Creake: London 1719

"Penitential Tables (London, 1719) is a compact, illustrated devotional work presenting fifty "Tables," each depicting a well-known penitent figure from the Old and New Testaments. This copy includes Tables 1-9 suggesting it is volume 1 of a probable 5 volume publication. Every table pairs a finely engraved copperplate scene with a short moral commentary, encouraging readers to reflect on the biblical episode and its lessons in repentance, humility, and divine forgiveness. The sequence begins with Adam and Eve cast out of Paradise and moves through the history of Israel, the ministry of Christ, and the lives of early Christian figures, culminating in St. John on Patmos. Each plate is dedicated to a contemporary noble patron, with their coat of arms engraved beneath the scene, blending religious instruction with a celebration of 18th-century patronage.

Originally translated from a French work written during the minority of Louis XIV, Penitential Tables reflects the period's taste for moralised scripture in both word and image. Its pocket-sized duodecimo format made it suitable for personal devotion, while the engravings provided a visually engaging narrative for readers of varying literacy levels. The accompanying texts emphasise the universality of sin and the hope of redemption, using biblical examples to inspire penitence and steadfast faith. The work stands as both a religious guide and an artistic object, valued today for its combination of theological reflection, historical engraving, and insight into early 18th-century English religious publishing."
