Scarce Latin/English Dictionary

" A substantial 17th-century Latin dictionary compiled by Adam Littleton—one of the landmark English lexicographical works of the Restoration era. The title page advertises the work as a dictionary in four parts: I. English-Latin, II. Latin-Classical, III. Latin-Proper (names/places), and IV. Latin-Barbarous (late/medieval/"non-classical" usages). Inside, you'll also find period scholarly apparatus and reference material, including sections such as a Kalendarium Romanum (Roman calendar tables) and dense double-column dictionary typography typical of serious learned books of the time.

Notably, the "Latin-Barbarous" section appears with its own separate title leaf dated 1677 (Dictionarium Latino-Barbarum. Cui praemittitur Praefatiuncula…), while the main dictionary title leaf is dated 1678—a great talking point for collectors and a tangible reminder of how large reference works were issued and gathered in parts. There are also striking contemporary/near-contemporary leaves including a dedication to King Charles II and a closing motto visible in the text: "Dei Gratia, Deo Gloria."

A terrific shelf-presence reference volume for collectors of early dictionaries, Latin scholarship, Restoration-period printing, or anyone building a serious classical library. It would particularly appeal to collectors of 17th-century lexicography, Latinists, and lovers of early English printed reference books."

Binding: (Likely rebind) Full calf with expected rubbing/scuffing and small marks from age/handling; spine label present and legible.
