Provenance: Carries the Bookplate of "Tatton Park" - an estate in the ownership of the Egerton family from 1598 when it was bought by Sir Thomas Egerton of Ashridge estate in Hertfordshire from his half sister Dorothy Brereton. Sir Thomas (c.1540-1617) had served in senior office at the court of Queen Elizabeth I and in 1603 became Lord Chancellor of England in the reign of King James I. Tatton became the home of a junior branch of the Egerton family, at the head of which were the Earls and Dukes of Bridgewater."

" Robert Burton (8 February 1577 - 25 January 1640) was an English author and fellow of Oxford University, who wrote the encyclopedic tome The Anatomy of Melancholy . On its surface, the book is presented as a medical textbook in which Burton applies his vast and varied learning, in the scholastic manner, to the subject of melancholia (or clinical depression). Although presented as a medical text, The Anatomy of Melancholy is as much a sui generis (unique) work of literature as it is a scientific or philosophical text, as Burton covers far more than the titular subject. Anatomy uses melancholy as a lens through which all human emotion and thought may be scrutinized, and virtually the entire contents of a 17th-century library are marshalled into service of this goal. It is encyclopedic in its range and reference. Burton was an obsessive editor of his own work, publishing five revised and expanded editions of The Anatomy of Melancholy during his lifetime - this book is the 4th edition. "
